And another lesson in VJ

This is a website I wish I had seen before – in 2008  the American News Report started. Their mission statement:  “exclusively dedicated to creating original, independent video journalism for the Web”. It appears as if they stopped reporting in 2009 but the lessons they expound are worth reading.

The creators of this site spent a week viewing clips on youtube (they must have been brave, and possibly a little drunk some of the time). At the end they had identified what makes a piece of good video journalism and what just either regurgitates clips from elsewhere or shows footage with no context.

They comment on the limitations of backpacker journalism, a view which is not shared by Bill Gentile’s Backpacker Journalism Blog, and they do seem to have a point.

There are many good concepts and one particular pearl of wisdom “video is an arduous medium”.

Sound advice all round.
